Today marks the 151st anniversary of Azerbaijan’s national press, founded with the publication of “Akinchi”, the country’s first Azerbaijani-language newspaper, by the prominent intellectual Hasan bey Zardabi on 22 July 1875.

Although only 56 issues of Akinchi were published between 22 July 1875 and September 1877, the newspaper played an invaluable role in the establishment and development of Azerbaijan’s national press. Dedicated primarily to promoting education and public awareness, Akinchi quickly gained popularity among both intellectuals and the general public. However, its publication was short-lived, as the authorities of the Russian Empire grew increasingly concerned about the newspaper’s influence in educating society and raising public awareness of social and political issues, ultimately forcing it to cease publication. Despite its brief existence, Akinchi became a platform through which leading intellectuals of the time promoted progressive and democratic ideas, making a lasting contribution to the country’s social, political, and literary development.

Since then, Azerbaijan’s press has experienced periods of both decline and revival, consistently serving as a reflection of society and its evolving perspectives.
