The Senior World Judo Championships, held at the National Gymnastics Arena in Baku, are underway.
Ushangi Kokauri (+100 kg), a Neftchi Sports Club judoka competing for the Azerbaijani national team, took to the tatami today. Starting his campaign in the round of 32, he defeated Kyrgyzstan’s Emirkan Yoldoshkaziyev by ippon in his opening bout. He then overcame Poland’s Jakub Sordyl before defeating fellow Azerbaijani Kenan Nasibov in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals.
Kokauri secured his place in the final by beating Finland’s Martti Puumalainen. In the gold medal bout, he faced Russia’s Inal Tasoev. Despite his efforts, Kokauri lost to his opponent and claimed the silver medal at the World Championships.
It is worth recalling that other Neftchi Sports Club representatives have also won medals at the tournament: Ahmad Yusifov (60 kg) claimed gold, Zelim Tskayev (81 kg) won silver, and Omar Rajabli (81 kg) secured bronze.
The prestigious tournament, which runs until October 11, features 622 judokas from 93 countries. Azerbaijan is represented by 24 judokas across 13 weight categories.
