Today, Azerbaijan celebrates Restoration of Independence Day. On October 18, 1991, the Supreme Council of Azerbaijan adopted the Constitutional Act on the State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Referring to the Declaration of Independence adopted on May 28, 1918, and the Declaration on the Restoration of the State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan, adopted by the Supreme Council on August 30, 1991, the Act affirmed that the Republic of Azerbaijan is the successor of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic.

This year marks the 35th anniversary of the restoration of Azerbaijan’s independence. Having established an independent republic in the early 20th century, the Azerbaijani people restored this historical continuity in 1991. For the sixth consecutive year, Azerbaijanis are celebrating this holiday in a new spirit, as a victorious nation that has fully restored its territorial integrity and sovereignty.

On October 15, 2021, the Azerbaijani Parliament adopted a new law entitled On Independence Day, which was signed by President Ilham Aliyev on the same day. Under this law, October 18, previously known as State Independence Day, was renamed Restoration of Independence Day.
