Today, the Restoration of Independence Day is celebrated in Azerbaijan.
On October 18, 1991, the Supreme Soviet of Azerbaijan adopted the Constitutional Act on the State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The Constitutional Act refers to the Declaration of Independence of May 28, 1918, and the Declaration of the Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Azerbaijan on August 30, 1991, on restoring the state independence of Azerbaijan, establishing that the Republic of Azerbaijan is the successor of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic.
This October 18 marks the 34th anniversary of the restoration of the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The Azerbaijani people established an independent republic at the beginning of the 20th century, and in 1991, the Republic of Azerbaijan restored its independence as the successor of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic.
Since 1991, the Azerbaijani people have celebrated this holiday for the fifth time, now as a victorious people who have restored their territorial integrity.
In May 1992, the National Assembly of Azerbaijan adopted the State Anthem of the Republic of Azerbaijan (music by Uzeyir Hajibeyov, lyrics by Ahmad Javad), and shortly after, the three-color flag and the national emblem featuring a flame and an eight-pointed star were approved.
On October 15, 2021, the Parliament of Azerbaijan passed a new law on “Independence Day.” On the same day, President Ilham Aliyev signed the law on “Independence Day.”
With the approval of the law, October 18 was renamed from Independence Day to Restoration of Independence Day.
